On Creating Worlds

Uncategorized Nov 05, 2020

Last week one of my piano students told me that she really missed going to concerts. She said that what she loved was being able to completely check out.

She loved checking out of where she was and checking in. Checking in to another world.

In her pieces that she is preparing, we talked about what kind of worlds she wanted to create. What world would she make and invite her audience into? What kind of a place would they be checking in?

Swirls of colors, truth, dancing, Pride and Prejudice meets Phantom of the Opera meets Les Mis, mounds of food, hearty characters and bold lines were among her descriptors. One piece would be a world of festivities and glow, another a dreamscape with an honest navy blue undertone and deliberate acknowledgement of pain.

She smiled as she shared her visions.

Both worlds stunning in their own way. Both worlds consciously chosen and then carried out through her craft.

As artists, I believe our job is to create worlds. Just like my student is doing.

It’s our job to create worlds with our art, invite people to check-in to them and say something with a feeling through the world to the world.

As a musician, the quality of the world I create is directly correlated to the amount and shades of colors I can paint with and how well I can paint with each.

The more honed my sound, intonation, rhythm, dynamics, articulation, phrasing and so much more, the more vivid a world I can create. The more vivid the world, the more compelling it will be for my audience to check in to. And, most importantly, the deeper experience and feeling I can create through the world for the world.

The same can be said for the mind. In this case, the craft is mindfulness. Something that I consider, art of the mind. Or, straight up art.

With our minds, we create a world. Our inner world reflects our outer world. With our minds, we create a reality, a life.

In life we do everything twice, first in the mind and then out in the world.

The medium is different, the process is the same. Imagine with abandon - what is the world you want to create? What is the feeling, what are the colors and scenes you want to be in? What world will you invite people to check into? And how will you consciously choose that dream world and carry it out with your craft?

The mindfulness swath of colors includes separating identity from thought, non-judgement, radical self-love, choosing beliefs and thoughts on purpose, the present moment and wielding all of these to create your reality. The colors of your inner world shape every action you take in creating the colors of your outer world.

The quality of the world depends on the quality of your mindfulness tools. The variety of shades, the soft and hard edges, the speed, the flow.

The beauty is, all of these elements of world creating are skills.

Skills can be learned.

If you can see it in your mind, you can hold it in your hand.

Different than music, the creation of worlds through mindfulness ends up being your life.

It becomes your life that you create and like my student said, check into on purpose.

As a teacher and coach, I also create worlds. I create worlds for people to exist in. Teaching and coaching are art.

I create custom made oasis’ for every person I get to serve. These worlds ebb and flow to meet each person where they are and who they are on any given day. The swirls of colors are open, expansive, supportive, encouraging, grateful, brave, choice, building skills, exploratory and free.

The worlds I create exist to support the birth, growth and expression of the worlds of others.

The worlds I create say to the world - you matter, your ideas matter.

Whether it’s a world through music that lasts 5 minutes, a world you create for the people you serve, or a world you make through your mind that lasts a life,

You are a creator.

What you create matters.

If you knew you could create any kind of world with your art, what would you create?

If you knew you could create a dream world and life with your mind, what would it be like? What kind of stories would take place there? What are the feelings you get to feel there?

If this resonates with you, please message me via my contact page and share the worlds you are creating. I would love to hear from you about your worlds!

And, if you’d like to experience how to hone the life and world you can create with mindfulness, feel free to book a free call with me here.
